Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout

Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout is a wacky new battle royale party game from Devolver Digital and Mediatonic. While fans are already finding quite a bit to love in its colorful graphics and addictive gameplay, it looks like the developer of Fall Guys is already looking at news ways of bringing in more fans from a fellow battle royale title. A recent suggestion from a fan seems to have Mediatonic keen to team up with Epic Games' Fortnite

The apparent inspiration for this potential crossover came when a fan on Twitter shared artwork they'd created of Fortnite-themed Fall Guys character skins. The fan art depicts two of the Fall Guys bean characters dressed in costumes resembling a llama piñata and a teddy bear from Fortnite. This image was accompanied by a caption in which the fan proposed the idea of an official Fall Guys and Fortnite collaboration. This was spotted by the official Fall Guys Twitter account, which retweeted the fan art with a caption asking Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney to pay attention.

"Operator, give me the number for @TimSweeneyEpic and also @FortniteGame, we have some business to talk," tweeted the official Fall Guys account.

The excitement shown from the developer has led to plenty of other fan art showing the potential silly designs that could result from an actual Fortnite and Fall Guys crossover. Needless to say, it looks like it would be a lot of fun and could embrace the funniest and most cartoonish aspects of both games.

While it's cool to see that the potential crossover has inspired fans to create their own designs, it should be mentioned that the overall response to this idea has been rather mixed. Some gamers have been very cold on the idea of a Fortnite collaboration, with one person saying they were considering not even buying Fall Guys now that there was a possibility of a crossover. One fan of Fall Guys said that they would outright delete the game from their library if this became a reality. Others have seemed extra keen on the idea. One fan felt that a crossover between the two properties could possibly bring some of the positivity of Fall Guys' fanbase over to Fortnite, which could be a good thing.

Fortnite has done plenty of fun crossovers in the past that tied into different franchises. These have seen varying levels of success, including the Infinity Blade crossover that introduced one of the most overpowered weapons in the game's history. A more recent collaboration saw DC Comics' Aquaman joining Fortnite: Chapter 2

Meanwhile, even though it's a newer game, Fall Guys has already done a bit of cross-promotion on its own. Preorders of the game from the Steam Store got a special character skin of Half-Life series protagonist Gordon Freeman. Despite the fact that Gordon has a parasitic alien head-crab latched onto his cranium, both Freeman and the parasite look as happy as can be. In other words, it's a Half-Life tie-in that perfectly fits the overall cutesy vibe of Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout.

Fans are already clamoring for other Fall Guys collaborations beyond the Fortnite crossover. Because of the exclusive Half-Life skin, some fans have expressed hopes for other console-exclusive character skins. One fan's wish list included Fall Guys skins based off of games like The Last of Us and God of War. Imagine running around as an adorable little Kratos; how great would that be?

Even with all of the hype behind it, Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout had a bit of a rocky launch. The game caused a commotion when it was announced that it would launch for free for PlayStation Plus members. While this was exciting for those players, the people who had preordered the game or were planning to buy it through Steam felt pretty frustrated with the decision. The game launched to a huge number of concurrent players, which the game's servers actually couldn't handle at first. After a day fraught with customer complaints and accusations of review bombing on the game's Steam page, it seemed like Fall Guys was back on track.

Despite the issues at launch, Fall Guys has been a massive success for Devolver Digital and Mediatonic. According to Devolver Digital, Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout has already sold over 2 million copies through the Steam Store.

In other words, Epic Games might be smart to take Mediatonic up on the offer of a collaboration. It could end up bringing a ton of new players to both games. If you're curious to see what all the hype is about, Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout is currently available for PlayStation 4 (free to PS Plus subscribers) as well as PC.
