Multiverses can be found in most franchises and Marveland DC Comics are no exceptions, but creating that many universes also creates a problem: which universe is the most important? Fans and heroes alike tend to think it is the one they're reading about, but in a preview for the new Marvel x Fortnite: Zero War #2, the hero known as the Foundation puts that idea into doubt.

In the new Zero War series heroes such as Spider-Man, Wolverine, and Iron Man find themselves fighting alongside the Seven from Fortnite Island. The Seven led by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s Fortnite hero, Foundation, are waging a war against the Imagined Order, who use their advanced technology to force multidimensional warriors to fight each other in endless loops. The Seven are hunting down a shard of the Zero Point, which they hope can power a mech capable of destroying the Imagined Order and thus save the island. Unfortunately, this source of all cosmic creation has fallen to Earth-616 and now the heroes of the Marvel Universe find themselves involved in a war across dimensions in hopes of bringing peace to both universes.

These sorts of multidimensional conflicts are nothing new, and in the preview for Marvel x Fortnite: Zero War #2 by Christos Gage, Donald Mustard, and Sergio D'avila, fans are shown how Iron Man and Foundation must work together despite their differences. During an ensuing battle almost all of the Avengers along with the Seven must break into a bunker to steal an Imagined Order ship. The two armored leaders trade insults and quips as each tries to assume command. Tony Stark then suggests that he be “Commander of Earth Forces,” and Foundation will be “Commander of Island Forces.” The Foundation quickly corrects him to say, “Commander of Reality Zero Forces.” Iron Man agrees, but remarks how putting “zero” in his title is just a way to make his reality sound more impressive. The armored Fortnite hero responds with, “Everyone thinks their reality’s the center of the Omniverse.”

This one small comment is actually incredibly insightful and points out the inherent plot hole in the ideas of multiverses. When fans read a comic book they are led to believe that they are seeing the most important reality. DC Comics even calls its prime universe Earth-o, and though Marvel is a bit more playful with its Earth-616 designation, the inhabitants of that universe still believe theirs is the most important world in existence. Except with both Marvel and DC claiming that honor, it's not actually possible, and that is why the Foundation’s remark is so astute. It’s not that one reality is actually more important than the other, it's just that each world’s heroes are arrogant enough to believe that it is.

The Foundation and the Seven know a thing or two about multidimensional thinking. The island of Fortnite is full of warriors from across the Omniverse, including heroes from the Marvel and DC Universes, and in this most recent crossover between the forces of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes and “Reality Zero,” fans get a good illustration of this multidimensional plot hole. The events of the Zero War are just as important to the residents of the Island as any event in Marvel or DC, despite Iron Man's dismissive comments. Fortnite may even make a crossover possible between Marvel and DC Comics, but no single reality is more important than the other. It's only the hubris of each universe’s heroes that says otherwise.
