Fortnite has been teasing the arrival of a particular king for a while now, and it appears today is the day to debut him. Courtesy of images uploaded to Epic, with an announcement forthcoming, we have our first look at what Lebron James looks like in Fortnite form as a new skin.

There are three variants shown to the Lebron skin, seen above. A casual look where he’s wearing a taco shirt and cargo shorts (?), a classy “king” vibe type look, complete with floating crown, and then a Tune Squad outfit meant to promote his upcoming Space Jam sequel, which is out this coming week.

According to insiders, a Lebron collaboration has been in the works for a while now, but was pushed due to the pandemic. But now it’s going live, and has worked out well with the release date of Space Jam: A New Legacy.

It’s a pretty sharp skin, one of only a scarce handful depicting real-life celebrities in the game. Most other skins we see from Fortnite of real people are content creators like Loserfruit or Ninja. We have had a few musicians, Marshmello, Travis Scott and Major Lazer, but few outside that. Fortnite did just have a few soccer stars get their own skins, Neymar Jr, Marco Reus and Harry Kane, but Lebron is the first NBA star. Fortnite has previously done deals with leagues like the NBA and NFL, but not for individual athletes outside of those mentioned.

I assume Lebron’s arrival will come with some sort of LTM event, as they usually do. Not sure what his back bling or mining tool or potential glider might be, but I’ll update if we learn about that shortly here.

Every day Fortnite’s reach continues to expand as they attempt to gather as many IPs as they can for their version of the Metaverse. No one else is even close to their collection of fictional characters who all co-exist in one game, headlined by Marvel, DC and Star Wars, but its collection of real-life celebrities and stars is growing quickly as well. It makes sense for anyone famous enough to be featured in a Fortnite skin to do a deal with Epic, as its essentially free money and promotion for them, giving Epic likeness rights to make what is always a pretty cool skin. It’s not clear whether those making these deals get a lump sum or an ongoing revenue split from the skin sales, but it could vary, depending on the star.

Lebron will likely be for sale a few different times, but something tells me this is going to be one of the more popular collaborations they’ve done.
