- Lord of the Rings Fans Are Convinced Fortnite is Teasing a Crossover
A Fortnite in-game Easter egg has sparked rumors that Epic Games is planning a crossover with the Lord of The Rings franchise.
A subtle in-game easter egg spotted in the hit battle royale game Fortnite has Lord of the Rings fans speculating that Epic Games is planning a crossover event with the famous fantasy series.
@ShiinaBR made a post on Twitter about the alleged Easter egg, which Eurogamer later reported on. The tweet pointed out that a sand castle on one of the game's in-world beaches bears a striking resemblance to Helm's Deep from the Lord Of The Rings films. @ShiinaBR concluded that the easter egg was a deliberate hint to a future LOTR crossover. The post has received over 6,700 likes so far. Hints from reliable Fortnite leaker @Midorado that Fortnite will soon release a crossover with either LOTR, Family Guy or Doom further fueled the rumors.
The Easter egg in question was created by the Rock Kid, who utilized the sand structure to create a battle scene that includes a surrounding wall and tiny cannons. Eurogamer's Tom Phillips pointed out that the latest change in the location occurred in the game's last update, which added visible destruction to the castle wall. Although the entire scene conjures memories of the famous Helm's Deep sequence from Lord of The Rings: The Two Towers, Epic Games has not addressed if there is any validity to the rumors surrounding Rock Kid's creation.
It should be noted that Warner Bros., which owns DC films, also currently holds the rights to LOTR. Although DC characters have been added to Fortnite's roster in past crossovers, no additional DC characters have been added to the game since the release of Warner Bros. multiplayer fighting title, MultiVersus. However, nothing indicates that a future Fortnite X LOTR crossover has been taken off the table.
Recently, Fortnite announced a major collaboration with the iconic Dragon Ball franchise. It released a new set of character skins, including Goku, Vegeta, Bulma and Beerus, that players could use for their avatars as they progress through the "Power Unleashed" event. The event adds challenges that can be completed to earn various unlocks. "Power Unleashed" went live on Aug. 16.
Fortnite is available now on multiple platforms, including PC, Playstation 5, Xbox One Series X|S and Nintendo Switch. The next high-profile installment in the LOTR franchise is the upcoming prequel series The Rings Of Power. This series is being produced by Amazon Studios and will debut on Prime video on Sept. 1.
